The European Council recognises the importance of making financial flows consistent with the post-2020 global biodiversity framework

During its latest Council, members of the European Council recognise the importance of making domestic and international financial flows, including in public procurement, consistent with the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The document also states that the EU and its member states will lead and step up efforts to halt biodiversity loss and restore ecosystems.

Madrid will host the Natural Capital Week 2019

Leading organisations in the natural capital space will convene in Madrid from 4th to 8th November for a week of events, discussions and networking: the Natural Capital Week 2019.
Events organised in the framework of this week aims at contribute to the Action Agenda for Nature and People  launched during the UN Conference on Biodiversity in 2018. This agenda aims to catalyse actions from all sectors and stakeholders of society in support of biodiversity, and support the adoption of an ambitious post-2020 global biodiversity framework at the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the Convention on Biological Diversity taking place in 2020. This New Deal for Nature and People will, in its turn, be a basis for the post-2020 EU biodiversity strategy.

The European Parliament agrees the taxonomy which determines which activities are environmentally and socially sustainable

The European Parliament has just given the green light to the criteria that will be taken into account to determine which economic activities are environmentally and socially sustainable within the European Union. This means that it has approved the so-called “taxonomy”, which seeks to avoid greenwashing and encourage investments in activities that are aligned with the Paris Agreement and contribute to make progress towards the ecological transition and to the achievement of the new European Green Deal (Pacto Verde Europeo).

This report by WWF, Climate, Nature and our 1.5°C Future, connects the findings from four major recent scientific reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Between them, these reports highlight the systemic changes needed across energy, land (food and natural systems), urban and infrastructure (including transport and buildings), and industrial systems in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C, as well as drawing attention to the fundamental connections between nature and humanity

EU Green Deal: Towards a climate-neutral Europe by 2050

The brand-new European Commission Presidency led by Ursula von der Leyen has launched a new plan including 50 concrete actions to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050: the EU Green Deal (Pacto Verde Europeo). This agreement is aligned with the Paris Agreement on climate change and aims at getting a clean economy, with zero emissions by mid-century, as well as protecting our natural habitat to improve the well-being of people, companies and to take the lead in climate action across the planet.
