Integration of Agriculture and Wildlife Ecosystem Services: A Case Study of Westham Island, British Columbia, Canada

This study assessed the effects of integrating agricultural programmes and the maintenance of waterbird habitats by applying the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment framework in a peri-urban region of Westham Island in British Columbia, Canada. An InVEST model was used to assess potential ecosystem services by integrating wildlife-supporting habitats within agricultural systems.

The scope of the assessment was based on two programmes focusing on wildlife habitats and soil quality (Grassland Management Programme and Winter Crops Management Programme) and the indicators determined were: food production, wildlife habitat and ancillary ecosystem services including pollination, soil quality and eco- and agro-tourism.

It is concluded that, thanks to actions to improve ecosystem goods and services established in cooperative programmes between the farming community and wildlife, promoted by an NGO, soil quality, biodiversity and the maintenance of agricultural and waterfowl habitats have increased.Integration of Agriculture and Wildlife Ecosystem Services: A Case Study of Westham Island, British Columbia, Canada
