Workshop "Accounting for Ecosystem Services of Complex Forests: Opportunities for Application and Integration in Forest Management"

The partners of the European Interreg COMFOR SUDOE project, Ecoacsa Biodiversity Reserve, and ITAGRA CT have organized the workshop "Accounting for Ecosystem Services of Complex Forests: Opportunities for Application and Integration in Public-Private Forest Management," in collaboration with the Junta de Castilla y León, as part of the Natural Capital and Forestry Working Group.

During the workshop, the latest developments from the Interreg COMFOR SUDOE project were presented, including a monitoring and accounting tool for natural capital in complex forests. This tool allows for the identification, measurement, and valuation of the benefits provided by forests and assesses how these can be incorporated into management models for these forest areas. The aim is to facilitate:

  • Access to financing.
  • Involvement and participation of society in achieving objectives related to the conservation of forest areas.
  • Contributions to decision-making and prioritization of current and future forest management models and investments with a sustainable approach.
  • In the case of public managers, the information provided by the tool can help identify or develop new aid and incentive programs at the regional level, as well as contribute to the evaluation and monitoring of past or potential investments (e.g., cost-benefit analysis) or assist in environmental assessment procedures, both at project and planning levels.

The organized dynamics had a practical focus so that participants could identify and understand the differential values provided by complex forests, while deepening their understanding of the natural capital approach and the opportunities arising from its application in forest management. This is particularly useful for facilitating informed decisions regarding financing, evaluation, and investment.

The workshop included a group dynamic to analyze project policies related to complex forests, aiming to diagnose the priorities and challenges addressed thus far and establish a policy diagnosis for the conservation and sustainable management of complex forests.
